The Department of History organized a guest lecture on the theme “ગાથા ગરવી ગુજરાતણોની” on August 4th, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Shivgauri Hall, Vanita Vishram Women’s University (VVWU).
The lecture was delivered by Dr. Falguni Purohit, Associate Professor and Head, Department of History, Shri HK Arts College, Ahmedabad. She highlighted the remarkable contributions of 19th-century women social reformers from Gujarat who laid the foundation for gender equality and social reform long before India’s freedom movement.
Dr. Purohit also spoke about the founders of Vanita Vishram Women’s University – Bajigauri Munshi and Shivgauri Gajjar – and their pioneering work in promoting girls’ education and starting vocational training programs for widows. She praised the institution for continuing the legacy of these legendary women reformers.
The session was attended by 150 students, who were deeply moved and inspired. Several students also came on stage to share their reflections, expressing how the stories of these women—often overlooked in history books—have ignited in them a desire to bring about positive change in society. They spoke about how the courage of these reformers motivates them to be brave and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.
We are extremely thankful to Hon’ble Provost Dr. Daxesh Thakar, COE Dr. Satish Patel, and Dr. Aditya Farsole, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, for their constant motivation and support.
The event was efficiently coordinated by Ms. Dipmala Jalu, Teaching Assistant, Department of History.
