

Handicrafts are one of the important sectors of the Indian economy. It reflects the rich cultural heritage and traditions passed down through generations.
To promote the handicraft legacy and sustainability, the Department of Fashion design, School of Vocational studies, Vanita Vishram Women’s University, Surat organized an exhibition “Raas” 2.0 on 16 – 17th September 2025. It is one of the annual programmes conducted every year by the department. The exhibition was organized at Shiv Gauri Hall, Vanita Vishram.
Students and faculties of all the departments and schools visited the exhibition. For the exhibition, students were given a prior task and continuous guidance for preparing creative handicraft products which includes systematic raw material selection, concept development, color selection, proper finishing, costing, attractive packaging, skills to interact with the consumer followed by most important point that is eye catching promotional skills of the products.
All the products were the outcome of the students’ hard work which they were doing since two to three months. All the products underwent many quality checkpoints by the esteemed faculties. Various stalls were presented which includes: exclusive luxurious crystal bead work handbags and keychains, portrait making, accessories and lifestyle products from waste fabrics, bead work accessories, products made by crocheting techniques, resin work products, attractive accessories specially designed for Garba the upcoming grand festival of Gujarat.
A few students also worked on traditional Indian printed fabrics. Ethnic garments like kurta, skirts and tops were designed. Traditional Indian embroideries were also implemented in various garments and accessories. A few students use the concept of waste management in which they have done the beautiful painting on unused CDs. Mehndi, tattoo making, zardozi work, nail art was showcased and practically performed by artistic students live on the dais.
